MY FELLOW KOREAN TUMBLES,

Rice is revered in many cultures, despite the common assumption amongst many of us that everyone would be tucking into bowls of mash given half the chance: as Sri Owen, the Indonesian-born author of the final word on the subject, The Rice Book explains, “Asians don’t eat rice because they can’t get anything else … there are often other crops which would feed them more easily and cheaply. They go to the enormous trouble of cultivating rice because, in flavour, texture and general satisfaction, no other staple food comes anywhere near it.” And then we go and invent boil-in-the-bag.

Felicity Cloakes, ‘How to cook perfect long grain rice’

A confession: I sometimes feel personally offended if people serve me shittily cooked rice. For a minute or so—and then I start applying it to face because rice is rice, and if I want perfectly cooked rice then I should go and cook it myself.

Oh I am SO glad I am not the only one offended by shitty rice.

POSTSECRET: I actually don’t know how to cook rice in a pot since I always use a rice cooker, so i when I have no such option, I make 죽/congee instead.

omigosh

To “not see color” today in any human endeavor that is disproportionately biased toward one race over others is at best naive and at worst a blatant show of support for the status-quo which for the long term preservation of public lands and our natural resources is unacceptable.

Issues of Race, Class and Gender in the 2011 Reel Rock Film Tour (from the comments section)

A really interesting discussion on something that I’ve been thinking about lately, especially as I get more and more in to rock climbing.

daybreakers

a terrible movie (probably, only 10 minutes in) but surprising parallels to the fossil fuel issues of today.
